Sorry y’all, it’s gonna be Steve Albini-recorded albums for a while. Albini, who had been recording her since The Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, said Kim Deal has a voice like a “smile.” I couldn’t have put it better myself. She seems so sweet and cool and funny, which makes the juxtaposition of what she’s singing about that much starker, because, yo, Pod is pretty gross. “Glorious” is about (maybe) being finger-fucked by your aunt, “Doe” is about tripping balls and going nuts, “Happiness is a Warm Gun” is The Beatles’ grossest song about how busting makes ya feel good. Deal said “Hellbound” is about a fetus that survives an abortion. Yikes! “Only in 3s” is about a threeway. You get the picture. The sound is meat and potatoes indie rock, but there’s always a tension between gentle and jagged sounds. In fact, the best indie rock balances the sweet and the sour, the sloppy and the precise, the preppy with the nasty, and The Breeders (that name!) are precisely as sweet and nasty as you can get. As usual, the drums fucking kick.
